Greece: Criticism rises over disaster management and military wages

In the Greek Parliament, MP Komninos Delveroudis of the NIKI party criticized the government's handling of natural disasters, housing assistance, and victim compensation. He emphasized that the state should prioritize prevention over mere compensation, noting that recurring fires, floods, and landslides have already destroyed approximately 300,000 acres of land. Delveroudis specifically questioned the completion of flood prevention works in Thessaly and criticized a proposed 150-square-meter limit on housing assistance, arguing it fails to account for rising construction costs and the needs of large families.

Separately, Elias Kolliris, president of the POMENS federation, voiced strong criticism regarding the wages and working conditions of military personnel. Speaking on the needs of uniformed services, Kolliris noted that while recent pay increases are a step in the right direction, they remain insufficient to meet current needs and do not bridge the gap with 2012 salary levels. He also criticized the state's tendency to utilize the armed forces to manage various domestic crises, including wildfires, floods, and recent issues regarding avian influenza.
