This increase aligns with Eurocontrol data showing that air traffic in southeastern Europe is approximately 40% higher than 2019 levels.

Olga Toki, vice-president of the Association of Air Traffic Controllers of Greece, has highlighted the intense pressure on controllers, noting that the sky often reaches capacity with little room for additional aircraft. The vulnerability of the infrastructure was previously exposed on January 4, when a major communication system failure forced the closure of Greek airspace for several hours, causing widespread flight cancellations and diversions.

In response to these challenges and pressure from the European Commission regarding navigation standards, the Greek government has announced a 300 million euro modernization program. The initiative includes installing new digital communication systems and replacing aging radar equipment, with installation having begun in mid-August and full completion targeted for 2028.
