Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection faces maritime tensions

Tensions are rising in the Eastern Mediterranean regarding the planned Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection project. Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has affirmed that the interconnection will proceed, denying any concessions regarding maritime claims in the Kasos area following recent political debates.

Simultaneously, Turkey has deployed the research vessel Oruç Reis to the Eastern Mediterranean, supported by three other vessels, following the issuance of a NAVTEX. The vessel is scheduled to conduct research through October 25 in an area that includes the planned route for the electricity cable.

Turkish commentators and military theorists suggest the deployment of the Oruç Reis serves as a response to Athens' position that it does not require Turkish permission to lay the cable. Turkey maintains that any research or cable-laying in areas it considers part of its continental shelf must be coordinated with Ankara in advance.
