Greece debates NATO exit amid EU security reforms

Greek political commentators argue that leaving NATO is the only option that serves national interests ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey, describing the alliance as an aggressive bloc that threatens global peace. They call for an accelerated, unified popular movement against what they view as the imposition of American and Western hegemony.

At the same time, European officials emphasize the need to operationalise the EU’s mutual‑defence clause (Article 42.7 of the Treaty) following the recent NATO summit in Istanbul, which highlighted Turkey’s enhanced strategic role. The push is for a concrete mechanism that can provide practical assistance to any member state under armed attack, moving beyond symbolic solidarity.

Both strands of discussion focus on Greece’s security posture, NATO membership, and the broader European defence architecture, while noting Turkey’s growing influence in regional and alliance affairs.
