Greece defeats Malta 20–18 in European Championship opener
Greece secured a 20–18 victory over Malta in their European Group C Championship opener at the Hibernians Rugby Training Field on Saturday, October 10.
Greece established an early lead through Sam Stratis, followed by a 90-metre interception try from captain Eddie Markopoulos, which put Greece ahead 10–6 at halftime. Although Malta briefly regained the lead in the second half via Josh Gatt, Greece responded with a try from Tyrone Tsagalias and a second score from Markopoulos to extend the lead to 20–12.
Malta mounted a late challenge, scoring in the final minute through Xavier Mamo, converted by Jarrod Sammut, to narrow the gap. Greece managed to hold on for the win despite a late sin-binning of Malta's Josh Cassar. Greece is scheduled to play next on October 17 in Chania, Crete, against Jamaica and Germany.
