Greece denies arrest of businessman linked to Istanbul corruption probe
A diplomatic dispute is unfolding between Greece and Turkey regarding the status of Murat Gülibrahimoglu, a businessman central to a corruption investigation involving the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Turkish media outlets, including TRT Haber and Sabah, have reported that Gülibrahimoglu was arrested on October 2, with some outlets labeling him the ‘treasurer’ of Ekrem İmamoğlu.
However, Greek authorities have categorically denied these reports, stating that the businessman is not being detained. According to the Greek Ministry of Migration and the Hellenic Police, there is no active Interpol Red Notice against him. Officials clarify that Gülibrahimoglu has been in Greece since July 14, 2026, when he entered the Malakasa Reception and Identification Center to file an official request for international protection (asylum), citing political persecution by Turkish authorities.
While his asylum application is currently under evaluation by Greek services, Turkey has submitted documentation requesting his extradition. The Istanbul 33rd Criminal Court is reportedly pursuing extradition procedures through Turkish ministries, seeking a 40-day temporary detention period under the European Convention on Extradition.
