Greece discusses US Patriot PAC3 upgrade for island defense

Greek military forces are planning to strengthen the deterrent capabilities of its islands through the potential acquisition of Patriot PAC3 air defense systems. Representatives from the American defense industry recently met with Greek Air Force staff at the Ministry of National Defense to discuss a holistic proposal that would integrate these advanced missile systems with Greece’s future F-35 stealth fighters.

This proposed integration is described as operationally revolutionary, as the fifth-generation F-35 aircraft would act as the “long eye” for the air defense systems, providing real-time data to allow the missiles to strike targets even in “blind spots,” such as behind mountainous terrain.

The potential upgrade has drawn reactions from Turkish ministers, who have characterized the deployment of new weapon systems on the islands as a threat. Diplomatic sources suggest that Turkey is attempting to cultivate a specific climate within both Turkish and international public opinion in response to these developments in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
