Greece domestic violence prevention focus shifts toward perpetrator control

Giorgos Kalliamanis, Honorary President of the Association of Police Employees, has called for a shift in domestic violence prevention strategies following a recent femicide in Greece. He argued that the focus should move from isolating victims to implementing stricter controls and monitoring of perpetrators.

The recent incident involved a woman killed in front of her two children, a 19-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter. This event marks the second femicide reported within a two-day period. Kalliamanis noted that the Hellenic Police handle approximately 15,000 domestic violence cases and related files annually.

While noting an increase in general violence, Kalliamanis emphasized the need to identify specific behaviors that indicate high risk to prevent extreme acts. He expressed support for the specialized domestic violence offices and the ‘Panic Button’ system implemented by the police to assist victims.
