Greece dominates EU cotton production with 80% market share
Greece accounts for approximately 80% of both the land area and the total cotton production within the European Union, according to data from the European Commission. This makes the country the EU's leading cotton producer.
In 2024, cotton cultivation covered roughly 2.11 million stremmata (approximately 527,000 acres) in Greece, yielding 709,700 tons of seed cotton from 36,682 producers. The crop is primarily concentrated in Central and Northern Greece, specifically in Thessaly, Macedonia, and Thrace.
Spyros Protopsaltis, General Secretary of Rural Development and Food, noted that this leadership is a significant advantage for local economies and international supply chains. He emphasized that future efforts must focus on quality, certification, technology, and sustainable resource management to help producers adapt to climate pressures and reduce costs.
