Greece doubles fishing fuel subsidy to 32 cents per liter

Greece's Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schoinas, has announced a doubling of the fishing fuel subsidy to mitigate rising energy costs for professional fishers. In coordination with the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, the new de minimis aid will provide 32 cents per liter for April and May 2026, up from 16 cents. For the period of June through August 2026, the subsidy will be 24 cents per liter, doubling the previously planned 12 cents.

The government is also exploring additional resources for further support, with further announcements expected in October. This measure aims to provide the fishing sector with support comparable to that received by farmers for fertilizer costs.

Historically, the government has provided significant aid to the sector, including 41 million euros in 2024 and 2025 to compensate approximately 9,500 fishers for net damage caused by protected marine species, and 25 million euros in 2022 to offset market disruptions caused by the crisis in Ukraine. Additionally, a 16 million euro program for vessel modernization remains open for applications until October 16, 2026.
