Greece draws strong European tourist interest but high costs curb summer travel for many locals

A recent survey for the European Travel Commission found that 81% of more than 4,700 Europeans are likely to travel in the next six months, with Southern Europe, especially Greece, ranking among the top destinations. Sixty‑one percent of respondents plan trips to the region, and Greece is cited as a preferred choice for sun‑and‑sea vacations.

At the same time, a separate Greek consumer‑research study shows that rising transport and accommodation prices are discouraging domestic travel. One in two Greek citizens do not intend to take a summer holiday, and families face island vacation costs ranging from €1,650 to nearly €2,800 for a five‑day stay, depending on the destination. To manage expenses, many Greeks are opting for their own second homes, staying with friends or relatives, or choosing cheaper rental rooms rather than hotels.

The contrasting trends highlight Greece’s appeal to foreign tourists while domestic households grapple with affordability challenges for summer getaways.
