Greece: Early foreign language education trends
In Greece, foreign language education begins at a very young age, often starting in kindergarten through games, songs, and interactive activities. While English is the most widespread second language in Europe, Greek students engage with it long before they have mastered writing in their native tongue.
As students progress through primary school, instruction becomes more systematic. In higher grades, a second foreign language—typically French or German—is often introduced depending on school resources. This educational journey continues through middle and high school.
Beyond the formal school system, private language academies play a significant role in Greek society. For decades, these institutions have been a staple of childhood and adolescence, as many families prioritize obtaining official language certifications. For many Greeks, learning a foreign language is viewed not merely as a school subject, but as an essential tool for higher education, employment, travel, and global communication. Achieving a B2 level in English is estimated to require approximately 500 to 600 hours of guided learning.
