Greece: Early retirement options for professional scientists

Under current Greek social security frameworks, thousands of self-employed professionals previously insured under the former ETAA funds may be eligible for early retirement. Professionals such as doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, and notaries can utilize e-EFKA retirement provisions to exit the labor market earlier than the standard age of 67.

There are two primary pathways for receiving a full pension. The first option allows retirement at age 67 with a minimum of 15 years of insurance. The second option permits full retirement at age 62, provided the individual has completed 40 years of insurance.

For those nearing the 40-year requirement, the recognition of fictitious years can be decisive. Even two or three such years can allow individuals with significant insurance histories to reach the 40-year threshold, potentially enabling retirement up to five years earlier than the general age limit.
