Greece faces rising fuel costs and economic volatility

Greece is facing significant economic pressures driven by rising fuel costs and energy volatility. Average prices for unleaded gasoline have exceeded 2.20 euros per liter, with diesel following closely. This surge has led many residents in Northern Greece to cross borders into North Macedonia and Bulgaria to seek cheaper fuel, where price differences can reach up to 60 cents per liter.

To combat these rising costs, the Greek government is considering a four-axis intervention plan, which includes extending fuel subsidies and negotiating discounts with refineries. The high cost of fuel is also impacting the trade balance; while exports have grown, the cost of petroleum imports rose by 66% in July, offsetting many economic gains.

Despite these challenges, some macroeconomic indicators remain positive. Moody’s recently upgraded Greece's economic outlook to positive, citing structural reforms and increased private investment. Additionally, the Bank of Greece reported a significant increase in private sector deposits, totaling 2.965 billion euros in August, driven largely by business inflows.
