Greece Education Minister announces €733 million for student housing

Greek Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki has announced a series of investments aimed at improving student welfare and educational infrastructure. A total of €733 million is being allocated for the creation of new student dormitories and the renovation of existing facilities across the country.

Key projects include a €24 million renovation of the Patision street dormitory, the development of the first dormitory for Panteion University by May 2027, and €18 million for renovations within the University of Athens campus. Additionally, the minister noted that funding for student housing allowances is projected to rise from €51 million in 2019 to €90 million by 2026.

Addressing recent student and teacher protests, Zacharaki stated that while the ministry listens to the community's demands, school occupations and closures are not the solution. She emphasized the importance of maintaining the right to education while acknowledging the significant burden of housing costs on students.
