Greece Education Minister announces school sports day and reforms
Greek Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki has announced several initiatives aimed at improving the national education system. On September 25, schools across the country are encouraged to participate in a nationwide day of athletic activities titled ‘A Leap Towards the Future’. The central event involves a symbolic long jump activity to be performed simultaneously at 10:00 AM, though schools may adjust the timing as needed. The initiative focuses on participation and personal development rather than competition, with adaptations provided for students with disabilities.
In addition to physical activities, the Minister addressed broader educational reforms. She noted that changes to controversial primary school textbooks are possible, provided they undergo the scientific review process by the Institute of Educational Policy. Zacharaki emphasized a transition toward a ‘Multiple Textbook’ model to offer educators more choices. Other strategic goals include the implementation of a National High School Diploma by 2027 and efforts to improve Greek student performance in PISA rankings, with a target to reach the top 25% in Europe by 2030.
