Greece education system faces reform calls as new school year begins

The start of the new school year in Greece has highlighted ongoing challenges within the national education system. Despite political promises of reform, students, families, and educators face persistent issues including a shortage of teaching staff and deteriorating infrastructure.

There are growing concerns regarding the declining attractiveness of the public school system. Many students are increasingly relying on private tutoring to acquire essential modern skills, such as foreign languages and informatics, which places a significant financial burden on Greek families. Furthermore, the secondary education system, particularly high schools, is increasingly viewed as a mere preparatory stage for university entrance exams, potentially at the expense of a broader, character-building curriculum.
