Greece: Educator service years and judicial rulings impact teaching status

In Greece, regulations regarding the reduction of teaching hours for educators are determined by several factors, including professional status, the organization of the school unit, and years of service. According to official circulars, recognized service for calculating these hours includes teaching in public primary and secondary schools, as well as specialized educational structures such as Music Schools, Special Education units, Naval Lyceums, and certain private schools under specific conditions. Service as a substitute or hourly teacher is also taken into account following permanent appointment.

In a separate administrative development, a court ruling in Chalkidiki led to the retroactive appointment of a teacher. Following a decision by the Athens Administrative Court of Appeals, an educator's permanent appointment date was adjusted from 2016 back to 2009. This judicial correction resulted in a full salary and grade scale restoration, upgrading the teacher's position to Salary Scale 10 and accounting for total recognized service, including postgraduate studies and previous experience.
