Greece electricity costs may drop due to reduced power theft

A reduction in electricity theft in Greece is expected to lead to lower electricity costs for consumers. The Regulatory Authority for Energy, Regulation and Monitoring of Networks (RAAEEY) is expected to finalize new network loss coefficients by early autumn.

These coefficients determine the amount of electricity suppliers must purchase beyond what is consumed by customers. The update follows a decrease in non-technical losses—energy consumed illegally—which dropped from 5.6% to 5.1% in 2024, according to HEDNO data. While technical losses remained stable at 5.8%, total network losses decreased from 11.4% in 2023 to 10.8% in 2024. This downward trend allows for a revision of the coefficients, potentially reducing the financial burden on suppliers and, subsequently, consumers.
