Greece emphasizes electrical safety standards for digital and green transitions

Greek Deputy Minister of Development, Lazaros Tsavdaridis, has emphasized the critical importance of certifying electrical equipment to ensure the safety of citizens, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Speaking at the 6th International Energia Exhibition, he noted that the green and digital transitions are driving the need for modern safety and quality standards.

Since January 1, 2024, all new electrical installations in Greece must comply with the ELOT 60364 standard to enhance safety and mitigate risks. Regarding the expansion of electric vehicle charging in existing buildings, Tsavdaridis explained that specific circulars have been issued. For instance, adding an EV charger or modifying an electrical panel requires an extraordinary inspection and a new Installer’s Declaration (YDE) only for the modified section, without affecting the regular re-inspection schedule of the rest of the installation.

To reduce bureaucracy, the electronic issuance and validation of the YDE is now conducted via the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) platform. Additionally, the Unified Registry of Persons and Electrical Installations is being upgraded with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Facility to serve as a modern digital tool for professionals and regulatory authorities.
