Greece energy market faces rising costs and renewable growth
Greece is experiencing significant shifts in its energy landscape, characterized by rising wholesale costs and rapid renewable energy expansion. Wholesale electricity prices rose over 21% in August, reaching an average of 133.4 euros per MWh. This increase is expected to impact retail bills starting September 1, though the extent of the impact will vary among suppliers, with vertically integrated companies better positioned to absorb costs.
Simultaneously, investment in renewable energy sources (RES) is surging. In May, the country added 724.2 MW of photovoltaic capacity and 65.7 MW of wind power, bringing total installed RES capacity to 18,317 MW. Greece now holds a dominant position in Southeast Europe, accounting for approximately 46% of the region's total wind power capacity.
However, these developments present challenges. The Hellenic Federation of Industries (SVE) has warned that high energy costs threaten industrial competitiveness. Furthermore, the rapid influx of solar power without sufficient storage capacity is creating downward pressure on wholesale prices during midday hours, complicating market stability.
