Greece establishes government committee to study nuclear energy

The Greek government has established a formal inter-ministerial committee to investigate the potential development and utilization of nuclear energy within the country. The committee is chaired by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Nikos Tsafos, and includes representatives from various ministries, including Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Development, and Health.

The committee’s primary objectives are to enhance public dialogue regarding nuclear technology using factual data and to evaluate whether nuclear power is suitable for Greece’s energy mix. Key areas of investigation include the potential for reducing consumer costs, enhancing energy security, financing models, risk management, and the legal and regulatory frameworks required for implementation.

A technical team will conduct scientific and operational assessments, ranging from technology evaluation to implementation models. The initial assessment phase is expected to take between 12 and 18 months.
