Greece expands childcare subsidy program for mothers

Greece is expanding its ‘Neighborhood Babysitters’ program to support parents, particularly mothers, in balancing professional and family life. The initiative is now being implemented nationwide and allows for the involvement of relatives in childcare.

Under the expanded program, student mothers can receive a monthly subsidy of 300 euros to help them complete their studies. Unemployed mothers are also eligible for 300 euros per month for a limited period to assist with job searches. For mothers working full-time, the subsidy increases to 500 euros per month, while those working part-time receive 300 euros.

The program targets mothers with children aged between 2 months and 2.5 years. Eligibility is subject to income limits: for a mother with one child, the annual individual income limit is 24,000 euros, and for two children, it is 27,000 euros. There are no income criteria for mothers with three or more children.
