Greece expands Crete coast guard amid rising migrant flows
Athens announced plans to bolster its coast guard on Crete in response to increasing migrant movements along the Libya-to-Crete route. The government cited growing migration as the justification for strengthening security and personnel in the region.
As part of the effort, Greece will procure four aircraft and two drones to be deployed in the sea area south of Crete. The enhanced assets are intended to boost surveillance and patrols, with drone operations and participation by Frontex accompanying the expanded presence.
