The Greek government has announced an expansion of the ENFIA property tax exemption program, affecting approximately 650,000 owners. Following announcements by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Thessaloniki International Fair, the population threshold for eligible settlements has been raised from 1,500 to 2,000 residents. In Western Macedonia, the threshold is even higher at 2,200 residents.

The measure aims for a 50% reduction in ENFIA in 2026, followed by a complete abolition in 2027 for qualifying properties. Crucially, the exemption applies only to primary residences with a taxable value not exceeding €400,000; secondary or holiday homes are not automatically exempt.

The expansion adds 131 new settlements to the list, including popular tourist destinations such as Ano Mera in Mykonos, Mesaria and Emporio in Santorini, and Faliraki in Rhodes. Regional impacts are noted in Larissa, where seven villages are now exempt, and in Aetolia-Acarnania, where areas like Thermo and Katoona qualify under the new criteria. Conversely, some areas like the Municipality of Agrinio and the Chora of Tinos remain excluded due to exceeding the population limits.
