Greece increases pensioner subsidy to 400 euros
The Greek government has announced an increase in the annual financial assistance for pensioners, raising the one-time payment from 250 euros to 400 euros, to be distributed on November 30, 2026. Announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the measure removes previous income and asset criteria, extending eligibility to all pensioners over the age of 65.
The total number of beneficiaries is expected to rise to approximately 2.2 million, up from 1.4 million in 2025. Other eligible groups include pensioners aged 60 and over receiving only survivor pensions, persons with disabilities regardless of age, and uninsured elderly individuals receiving benefits through OPΕΚΑ. The total fiscal cost of this measure is estimated at 879 million euros.
While the government presents this as significant support, the Unified Retirees Network (ENDISY) has criticized the move, labeling it an insufficient “handout” that fails to address the real impact of inflation and rising living costs. The network also noted that over 300,000 pensioners under the age of 65 remain excluded from the benefit.
