Greece marks World Breast Cancer Day with prevention initiatives

On the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day, various Greek institutions, political leaders, and community groups have launched initiatives to promote prevention and early diagnosis. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the 'PROLAMVANO' program, which provides free preventive screenings, will become a permanent national policy funded by domestic resources. The program has already reached over 1.3 million women via SMS, resulting in 1.2 million digital mammographies and the identification of 87,000 findings.

In the medical sector, discussions have highlighted advancements in breast oncology, including more targeted therapies and less invasive surgical techniques that replace traditional radical mastectomies. Efforts are also underway to expand the Network of Integrated Breast Centers across seven National Health Service (ESY) hospitals to provide multidisciplinary care.

On a personal level, Victoria Della, daughter of the late Georgia Mastrokosta, shared a video message to dispel rumors and emphasize the importance of supporting those facing serious illnesses. Local communities have also participated through symbolic actions, such as pink light illuminations in municipal buildings and awareness events in cities like Larissa, Marathon, and Nea Figaleia.
