Greece expands maternity protection leave eligibility

A recent ministerial decision in Greece has expanded the eligibility for special maternity protection leave. According to labor expert Margarita Kardari, the nine-month leave, which provides benefits based on the minimum wage paid by DYPA, is now available to a broader range of individuals.

In addition to biological mothers, the new regulations include stepmothers and surrogate mothers. The leave also covers the adoption of children up to the age of eight. Under certain conditions, the right to this leave may be transferred to the father.

The expansion specifically benefits part-time and seasonal workers, ensuring they retain access to these protections. The special leave can follow the standard 17-week maternity leave or be combined with regular leave, depending on the worker's choice. Social security coverage is maintained throughout the duration of the leave.
