Greece expands reimbursement for cancer biomarker testing
The Greek Ministry of Health is expanding the reimbursement of molecular cancer tests, known as biomarkers, to facilitate personalized treatment. These tests identify specific genetic mutations and proteins within cancer cells, allowing doctors to select the most effective therapies for individual patients.
The new plan aims to cover biomarkers for various types of cancer, including lung, breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic, and bladder cancers. While the ministerial decision has been modified, the coverage is not yet active. Reimbursement is expected to begin in early 2027, following the conclusion of negotiations between the National Organization for the Provision of Health Services (EOPYY) and diagnostic laboratories.
Until these negotiations are finalized, the new tests will not be available through electronic prescribing and will not be reimbursed, meaning patients may still face significant out-of-pocket expenses for these expensive diagnostic procedures.
