Greece endures heat wave with temperatures soaring to 38‑40 °C

During the week of 12‑21 July 2026, much of Greece experienced a heat wave, with maximum temperatures reaching 38 °C across the mainland and up to 40 °C in isolated inland spots. The forecast called for generally clear skies, occasional localised showers and thunderstorms in mountainous areas, and winds of 4‑7 Bft, especially over the Ionian and Aegean seas. UV levels were expected to be very high, prompting health advisories to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and use sunscreen.

Fire danger was pronounced, particularly on Crete where the fire‑risk map rated large parts of the island as Category 3 (high) and other regions such as Thessaloniki and Kilkis as Category 4 (very high). Authorities prepared additional fire‑watch patrols and urged the public to refrain from activities that could spark flames.

Neighbouring Balkan states reported similar heat, with Bosnia‑Herzegovina, Croatia and North Macedonia seeing daytime highs of 34‑38 °C and occasional local downpours. Meteorological services across the region warned of strong UV exposure and recommended precautions for vulnerable groups.
