Greece experiences intensified thunderstorms and strong northerly winds

Meteorologists forecast that today will be the last day of notable instability across mainland Greece, with local thunderstorms and heavy rain affecting the western mountains and the interior. The meltemi winds are already strengthening and are expected to reach 6–7 Bft in the Aegean over the weekend, rising to 7–8 Bft by early next week, increasing the fire danger especially in eastern mainland regions such as Attica.

Temperatures will stay high, around 35–36 °C, before gradually climbing to near 38 °C later in the week as warmer air masses move in from central Europe. On Thursday afternoon, thunderstorms are anticipated in the Peloponnese, western and central mainland, Thessaly, Epirus and Macedonia, with possible hail and strong electrical discharges. The forecast calls for continued vigilance against wildfires as the winds strengthen and heat persists.
