Greece experiences warm September start following record summer heat

Greece is experiencing a warm start to September, with temperatures expected to remain above average during the first half of the month. Meteorologist and Research Director at the National Observatory of Athens, Kostas Lagouvardos, noted that while some rain and storms occurred in Northern Greece recently, temperatures are rising again, potentially reaching 37 to 38 degrees Celsius.

Preliminary data from meteo.gr indicates that the 2026 summer ranked as the 6th hottest in the country over the last 66 years. Out of 92 summer days, 68 were above the 1991-2020 average, with the mean temperature sitting 1°C above normal. August was specifically noted as the 3rd hottest month since 1960, with a deviation of +1.6°C above the mean. The highest temperature deviations were recorded in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece, and the western Peloponnese.
