Balkans and Central Europe hit by storms and heatwaves

A frontal system and a heat ridge are driving unsettled weather across the Balkans and Central Europe in mid‑July 2026. Heavy thunderstorms with hail, localized downpours and wind gusts up to 85 km/h have battered western and central Slovakia, eastern Slovenia and parts of Croatia, causing flooding, power outages and damage to vegetation. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute issued a first‑degree warning for several regions, while Slovenian and Croatian authorities reported strong gusts of 97 km/h and rain totals exceeding 60 mm in isolated spots.

Heatwave alerts are also in force. Bosnia‑Herzegovina expects temperatures up to 39 °C, with orange warnings for the southern region. Greece faces several days of temperatures above 40 °C, especially in Thessaly, Central Greece and the Attica area, where mercury may reach 42 °C. Croatia reports widespread highs of 34‑38 °C and localized peaks above 40 °C. Hungary is under an orange warning for thunderstorms and strong winds as a cold front brings rain and a temporary cooling period.

Meteorological services in Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Croatia, Greece, Hungary and Slovakia have all issued alerts ranging from orange to red, urging the public to limit outdoor exposure, stay informed about local warnings and take precautions against flooding, hail and heat‑related health risks.
