Greece faces EU subsidy scandal over organic farming fraud

An investigation by the European Commission has uncovered significant irregularities regarding organic farming and livestock subsidies in Greece. Inspectors reported instances of fraudulent activity where the number of declared animals was vastly inflated compared to official veterinary records.

In one specific case, a livestock unit reported 435 animals across two veterinary reports, yet payment systems indicated a total of 1,276 animals. In Crete, inspectors discovered 381 animals during an on-site check, despite records showing that all animals in that unit had died from disease in 2024.

The Commission's findings suggest that certification bodies are unreliable and that existing oversight is insufficient. These discrepancies have raised concerns that Greece may be forced to repay millions of euros in misappropriated EU funds. Local agricultural representatives have called for more rigorous inspections to ensure subsidies reach legitimate producers.
