Greece faces major judicial challenges amid political tension

The Greek government faces several high-profile legal challenges that are expected to impact the political landscape ahead of upcoming elections. The start of the new judicial year on September 16 is anticipated to intensify political friction as various sensitive cases move forward.

In the phone tapping scandal, Supreme Court Prosecutor Evangelos Bakelas has issued a third refusal to withdraw the case files from the archives. This decision follows requests from former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, former Minister Christos Spirtzis, and lawyer Zacharias Kesse, who represents many of the victims. A secondary criminal trial involving four businessmen is scheduled to begin on December 11, 2026, at the Athens Three-Member Misdemeanor Court.

Additionally, legal scrutiny is turning toward the OPΕΚΕΠΕ case, which involves four trials where several sitting government members of parliament are among the defendants.
