Greece faces rising inflation and higher summer prices for food and services

Data from the Greek statistical authority show that the Import Price Index for industry rose 18.4% year‑on‑year in April, with import costs from non‑Eurozone countries up 31.1% and energy prices jumping 65.3%. These increases are seen as a leading indicator of consumer‑price inflation, which in May 2026 reached 5.2% in Greece versus 3.2% across the Eurozone.

Agricultural product prices are also climbing: the index for farm output rose 4.8% compared with a 2.9% EU average, while meat prices rose 11.8% and fresh milk 4.4% above the Eurozone trend. Combined with heightened demand from the tourism season, the higher costs of accommodation, catering and transport are adding further pressure on household budgets. Analysts warn that the convergence of import‑price shocks, energy costs and seasonal tourism demand could keep inflationary pressures high throughout the summer months.
