Greece faces severe flooding in Crete and student food poisoning
Severe weather and health incidents have impacted various regions in Greece. In Crete, heavy rainfall and flooding have caused significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture. In the Zonia area, approximately 30 people were preemptively evacuated from their homes, and roughly 2,500 residents in Zonia, Livadia, and Krana are currently without water due to a destroyed supply network. Preliminary estimates suggest that over 80% of potato and vegetable crops in the Lasithi Plateau have been destroyed.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has pledged support for those affected, noting that the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection activated emergency mechanisms and issued warnings via the 112 system. A government delegation is scheduled to visit the island to coordinate damage assessment and restoration efforts.
Separately, six students from Pinewood The American International School of Thessaloniki were hospitalized in Katerini following a school excursion to Mount Olympus. After being airlifted to Katerini General Hospital, the students were treated for suspected food poisoning and have since been discharged. Authorities are awaiting further laboratory results.
