Greece feta reserves face shortage as milk production drops
The Greek feta cheese market is facing a significant supply crisis driven by a sharp decline in sheep milk production and rising international demand. Michalis Sarantis, president of the National Interprofessional Feta Organization, warned at the annual PSE conference that current reserves may not last until the end of 2026.
Sheep milk production is estimated to have decreased by approximately 80,000 tons, creating a deficit of about 20,000 tons specifically for feta production. Despite this shortage, exports have increased by roughly 7%, further straining available stocks.
As a result of these supply pressures, prices are expected to rise. While feta currently fluctuates between 12 and 13 euros per kilogram, experts suggest prices could climb to 15 or 16 euros per kilogram. This upward trend is already driving some consumers toward alternative white cheeses. It is estimated that it will take at least two years of intensive effort to return sheep milk production to pre-surplus levels.
