Greek fishermen launch nationwide strikes over rising fuel costs

Greek professional fishermen have launched nationwide strikes and protests, warning that the industry is facing a matter of survival. The demonstrations, which began on October 1, involve vessel gatherings in major ports such as Piraeus and Thessaloniki, as well as symbolic road and port blockades.

The primary driver of the unrest is the dramatic increase in operational costs, specifically the price of marine diesel. Fishermen report that daily fuel costs have surged from approximately 550 euros to as much as 1,450 euros. They are demanding fuel subsidies similar to those provided to fishermen in other European Union nations, such as Italy and France, and are calling for the immediate release of allocated EU funds.

Additional grievances include the rising costs of fishing equipment like nets and ropes, the impact of phytoplankton outbreaks on gear, and concerns regarding the design of new marine protected areas. In Thessaloniki, protesters have also targeted the import of fish from Turkey and Bulgaria. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has acknowledged the issue, stating that the government is working on potential financial assistance to support the sector.
