Greece: Food safety recalls and beef labeling disputes

The Consumer Institute of Greece (INKA) has requested changes to beef labeling to prevent consumer deception. Currently, meat can be labeled as ‘Greek Breeding over 5 months’ even if the animals were born abroad and only fattened in Greece for five months. INKA is calling for the removal of this label, proposing it be replaced with ‘Imported – Fattened in Greece for over 5 months’ to clarify the product's true origin.

Separately, the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) has issued an immediate recall for a specific batch of organic Cretan Aloe drinkable gel produced by EVIO IKE. Laboratory testing revealed aloin A and B levels totaling 3.2 mg/kg, which exceeds safety limits set by EU Regulation 2021/468. Consumers who have purchased the 750 ml product with an expiration date of 15/09/2027 are advised not to consume it.
