Greece Forms Three New Special Operations Units with Reservists

Greece Special Operations reservists Agenda 2030 Defence Ministry

The Greek Ministry of National Defence has approved the creation of three new Special Operations units under the "Agenda 2030" reform. The units will be located in Attica, Central Macedonia and northern Evros, with ministerial decisions signed by Defence Minister Nikos Dendias.

Two of the three units will be staffed entirely by reservists, a move intended to address past under‑utilisation of reserve personnel and to boost operational readiness. Reservists will be assigned in advance to a specific unit, mission and duties. The reform also includes the establishment of reserve training centres in Avlonas (Attica) and Litohoro (Piraeus). Dendias stated that “the reservist is the connecting link between the Armed Forces and Greek society, embodying a tradition of citizen‑soldier defence lasting over 2,500 years.”
