Greece to extend fuel subsidies and implement supermarket price cuts
The Greek government is preparing to announce an extension of the 10-cent per liter subsidy on diesel fuel to help mitigate rising costs for drivers and transport professionals. Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos stated that the duration of this extension will depend on international energy market trends and geopolitical developments, specifically the conflict in the Middle East. While retail prices for gasoline and diesel currently remain above 2 euros per liter, a decline in Brent crude prices toward 88 dollars per barrel may lead to lower prices at the pump over the coming weekend.
Simultaneously, a major initiative under the National Social Agreement will take effect on Monday, August 31. This program introduces price reductions on approximately 1,660 supermarket products, with discounts ranging from 5% to 30%. The list includes branded goods, private label items, meats, and school supplies. Consumers will be able to identify these items via special shelf markings and a digital platform to assist in managing the cost of living.
