Greece: Funding gap for Taygetos protection and political disputes
In Greece, Member of Parliament Alexis Charitsis has submitted a parliamentary inquiry regarding the significant funding gap for the protection and restoration of the Taygetos mountain region. Charitsis reports that while the total needs for essential interventions and flood protection exceed 15 million euros, only 2 million euros have been secured to date, leaving a 13 million euro deficit.
The inquiry highlights the vulnerability of mountain communities, such as Alagonia and areas within the Kalamata municipality, which face risks from landslides and road closures following extreme weather events last winter. Charitsis emphasized that the issue impacts resident safety, infrastructure, and the socio-economic viability of these communities.
Separately, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis issued a sharp critique of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Marinakis alleged that discrepancies between Tsipras’s recent economic announcements and his party’s official 2027-2030 fiscal program constitute “political frauds.” The government spokesperson specifically challenged the feasibility and costings of the proposals presented by the former leader.
