Greece Health Ministry reports increase in medical specialist training

Greek Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous announced that the country has successfully filled all available medical specialty positions. He noted that in 2019, only 7,000 out of 10,000 available specialty training positions were occupied, whereas currently, all 10,000 positions are filled.

The Deputy Minister also stated that the trend of young doctors fleeing to foreign countries has been halted. Regarding the National Health System (ESY), he mentioned that while the system currently has its highest level of personnel to date, there remains a continuous need for more nursing staff.

Additionally, the Ministry is restarting the ‘PROLAMBANO’ prevention programs. The ‘Fofi Gennimata’ program for breast cancer prevention has been reactivated, and a program for cardiovascular diseases is expected to resume shortly following the transition of funding to national resources.
