Greece considers energy subsidies amid rising fuel and heating costs
The Greek government is preparing potential intervention measures to combat rising energy costs driven by international market volatility and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. High Brent crude prices and natural gas fluctuations are threatening to significantly increase costs for heating oil, diesel, and electricity for households and businesses.
Government officials, including Economy Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis and Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, have indicated that while fiscal reserves are being monitored, support measures may be implemented in October. Discussions include expanding heating oil subsidies, potentially applying them at the pump, and adjusting income criteria for heating grants to reach more citizens.
Heating oil prices are projected to reach between 1.85 and 1.90 euros per liter, a sharp increase from last year's starting price of approximately 1.10 euros. Additionally, the Panhellenic Federation of Fuel Retailers (POPEK) has requested that subsidies be applied directly at the pump to prevent fraud and reduce the financial burden on consumers. The government aims to finalize its strategy by late October to address the anticipated winter energy demands.
