Greece historical milestones: Capture of Tripoli and Ionian union

September 23 marks several significant historical milestones, most notably the capture of Tripoli during the Greek Revolution in 1821. Under the leadership of Theodoros Kolokotronis, Greek forces successfully seized the city after a three-month siege, dealing a major blow to Ottoman forces.

In 1863, the Ionian Parliament voted for the union of the Ionian Islands with the Kingdom of Greece. This historic decision, noted by a commemorative marble plaque in Corfu, was made under the protection of Great Britain.

Other historical events noted for this date include the appointment of Otto von Bismarck as Prime Minister of Prussia in 1862, the unification of Saudi Arabia in 1932, and the announcement by US President Harry Truman regarding the Soviet Union's first atomic bomb test in 1949.
