Greece hit by severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail across much of the country this weekend
Meteorologists warn that Greece will experience an unstable weather pattern through the weekend, with the strongest disturbances expected on Saturday. Heavy rain, strong thunderstorms and occasional hail are forecast for most regions, including Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Crete, Evia and many Aegean islands. Winds may reach 6‑7 Beaufort, especially over the northeastern Aegean.
Temperatures are expected to stay between 17 °C and 26 °C, with the capital Athens seeing 17‑25 °C and Thessaloniki 24‑25 °C. Rainfall will begin on Friday in parts of Attica and continue into Saturday, when the majority of the country will face the most intense conditions. A brief improvement is possible on Sunday morning, but showers and thunderstorms are likely to return in the afternoon across several mainland areas. Authorities advise caution for outdoor activities and travel due to the risk of strong winds, lightning and hail.
The forecasts indicate a gradual weakening of the system from Tuesday onward, as atmospheric flows shift toward warmer air from northern Africa.
