Greece holds commemorations for WWII resistance and occupation victims

Various ceremonies were held in Greece to commemorate historical events from the 1944 German occupation during World War II.

In Malevizi, the Municipality and the Local Community of Kaleses honored the memory of Kalesian citizens executed by German occupation forces. The ceremony took place at the Monument of the Fallen in Tupaki, marking 82 years since the executions. Mayor Menelaos Bokeas emphasized that the duty to these individuals extends beyond mere ceremony to ensuring their memory informs modern consciousness.

In Mouzaki, a memorial column was unveiled to honor nine EAM-ELAS fighters who died during the Battle of Fanari in August 1944. Dimitris Koutsoumbas, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), spoke at the event, noting that the ELAS operation against the Fanari railway station contributed to the subsequent liberation of Karditsa from Nazi forces. He connected the historical resistance to contemporary political struggles.
