Greece: Hospital doctors and teachers announce strikes for October 21
Public sector workers in Greece have announced significant industrial actions scheduled for October 21, 2026.
The Federation of Hospital Doctors of Greece (OENGE) has called for a strike to protest working conditions and demand salary increases, the hiring of permanent staff, and increased public funding for the National Health System (ESY). OENGE criticized current government policies, citing issues such as excessive on-call shifts, staff shortages leading to patients being treated in hallways, and closed surgical theaters. The federation also called for the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th month salaries.
Simultaneously, the Greek Teachers' Federation (DOE) has declared a 24-hour strike for primary education teachers and kindergarten staff. The federation is protesting against mandatory overtime used to cover staff shortages, teacher evaluations, and general working conditions. While the strike is nationwide, the operational status of individual schools will depend on the level of participation by staff.
