Greece housing policy faces criticism over rising costs

Criticism has been directed at the Greek government's housing policies following new announcements made during the 2026 Economic Forum. Despite a continuous stream of interventions—including programs such as ‘Spiiti Mou 1’, ‘Spiiti Mou 2’, and the newly announced ‘Spiiti Mou 3’, as well as rent subsidies, tax breaks for vacant homes, and student housing initiatives—the cost of living and housing remains a critical issue.

Critics argue that these repeated announcements have failed to curb rising housing costs. The persistent difficulty for young people to move out, families struggling to afford larger homes, and students facing disproportionate rents suggest that the government's measures have not addressed the core social problem. Furthermore, some recent announcements, such as the provision of 8,500 new student beds, appear to overlap with figures previously announced in 2022 and 2023, leading to calls for accountability rather than further promises.
